Moira Nusbaum (Myers), DVM & Practice Owner

Dr. Nusbaum was born and raised in Gapland, MD a small rural community in Washington County. Growing up, she competed successfully in the Hunters all the way through Amatuer/Owners. A love of horses was instilled in her early, and followed her through high school and college. After graduating from West Chester University in PA, she worked for a year as a nurse at the Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center in Leesburg VA. The valuable experience solidified the goal of becoming an equine veterinarian. Moira attended the VA-MD Regional College of veterinary medicine, graduating in May 2010. Soon after graduating, Moira accepted a position at the Piedmont Equine Practice, in The Plains, VA - an area known for its dense population of sport horses. Despite being offered an opportunity to stay on at Piedmont long term, Moira decided to follow her heart and move home to start her own practice. She founded PenMar Equine in June 2011 and has enjoyed all aspects of practice ownership since. Moira married her high school sweetheart Stinson in 2009 and together they welcomed Colten in 2014 and Norah in 2020. In her spare time (funny!) Moira does ride her horse 'Three' mostly on the trails.

Maggie Loomer, DVM - Veterinary Associate

Dr. Maggie Loomer was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia. Her aunt introduced her to horses at a young age, and she soon found herself owning a horse and working at a large boarding facility. It quickly became clear that Maggie could not live without horses. She attended the University of Virginia for undergrad and then made the trek across the country to vet school at University of California, Davis. After vet school she joined an equine practice in Phoenix, AZ. During that time, she pursued her dreams of becoming certified in animal chiropractic through the International Veterinary Chiropractic Association. She continues to return to Options for Animals, School of Veterinary Chiropractic a few times a year to teach chiropractic techniques to other veterinarians and chiropractors. The desire to be closer to family brought her back to the East Coast, and she is very excited to be joining PenMar Equine! Her special interests include caring for geriatric patients, foals, ophthalmology, and chiropractic. She is excited to be learning equine acupuncture this winter and hopes to offer this service to clients in the spring of 2021.

Cheyenne Sams, DVM - Veterinary Associate

Cheyenne was born and raised in Loudoun County, Virginia. She has been involved with horses in some way since she was old enough to walk. She graduated from the University of Virginia in 2016 with a B.A. in Biology, where one of her favorite activities was volunteering at a program that worked with children and horses. Cheyenne finally ventured out of her home state to attend veterinary school at the University of Illinois, where she had the opportunity to experience what Midwest winters are like. In veterinary school, Cheyenne was involved in various clubs, including the American Association of Equine Practitioners. (After so many years as an extern), Cheyenne made her way to Piedmont Equine (Dr. Moiras place of internship as well) where she spent a year as an intern followed by a 1 year long fellowship in sports medicine and surgery. In her spare time, Cheyenne enjoys hanging out with friends, and running and hiking with her dogs, Roo and Pippa.
